• The Athame is a knife-like tool used to channel energy and casting the circle.  The Athame (pronounced ah-thom-ay or a-tham-ay) is probably the first tool acquired by a neophyte. It is used in almost every tradition. Traditionally, the Athame is a black handled knife or dagger sometimes inscribed with sigils or magickal symbols, though many other styles are used according to personal preference.  The blade is usually made from iron or steel, less commonly used is cooper or bronze. In today’s uses, the point and blade are usually blunted and dull.
  
• The Athame is used to draw the sacred circle in which Magick can be performed. It's used to slice food which has been consecrated to the Gods or Spirits. It's used to carve symbols and images onto clay tablets or other materials. This is probably the single most important tool used by Occultists.
  
• The Athame is used to draw the sacred circle, to invoke and banish the sacred energies. It's like a badge of honour, and the Athame is greatly respected. If you have only one tool, make sure that it's the Athame. Allow no one to touch this tool (and all tools for that matter), because in so doing they can add their own energies to it, which is something that you do not want.
  
• In some modern Pagan uses the Athame is not used to cut anything on the physical plain; it is used as an extension of self. The Athame is used to direct the flow of will or energy, to invoke or banish. Held in the dominant hand, the Athame is used to guide energy from the self to cast a circle.  Imagine energy flowing from your hand through the Athame flowing right from the tip of the blade. To absorb energy back into the blade, which is a very good idea, imagine the reverse happening but stop the energy in the blade.
  
• In neo-pagan witchcraft the Athame is used only for casting the circle, and never for cutting. Other older traditions use the knife as much as possible in the belief that its power increases with use. Supposedly having magical properties of its own, traditionally, an Athame would be black handled and often bore magic symbols on the blade, though many other styles are used according to personal preference - it may be any colour, shape, and size. Use the one with which you feel right.  Generally an Athame is not used to cut anything material. Once consecrated as your Athame, the blade should never be used for normal cutting.
